Australian Open 2011 – Who’s Your Favourite?

I think this could be the first time in a long time that neither Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer make the final of a Grand Slam. Yes, they are the top two ranked male players in the world but I think there are several gunning not only for the coveted Gland Slam trophy but to get one step closer to knocking them off their perch for one of those top two spots. What better place to do it than the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open.

Novak Djokovic – In the majority of interviews I’ve seen he comes across as a bit of a joker. Deep down I think he’s really pissed that he hasn’t achieved the number one ranking yet and only has the 2008 Australian Open to his name. After finishing 2010 as runner-up at the US Open Djokovic is hungry for the championship, look out!

Robin Soderling – I actually don’t know much about the Swede except that he was pretty impressive taking out the Brisbane International just the other week. Ranked at number 4 in the world he must have had a successful 2010. Soderling seems to be a bit of a quiet achiever and a good chance of taking out his first Glam Slam title.

Andy Murray – He’s cruised into the fourth round with what, on paper, appears to be easy wins. But he’s playing well and has more experience under his belt after being last years runner-up. Murray will be aiming to go one step better in 2011.

Hmm… tough call. I think Soderling will narrowly defeat Murray in the quarters (that would be an awesome match to watch live) to set up a semi-final clash with Nadal. Another tough watch for Soderling which he’ll win to go on to meet Djokovic in the final who will have beaten Federer in the other semi. Soderlings journey to the final will have been tougher than Djokovic so I think he’ll run out of steam with Djokovic claiming his second Australian Open in four sets.

As for the womens… I hate to say anything negative against my own sex but I’m really not that fussed on watching. After the retirement of Swiss legend Martina Hingis I really haven’t followed the womens game all that much. Hopefully Kim Clijsters won’t be as disappointing as last year though and take home the trophy.

OMG! Soderling just lost to 46th rank Alexandr Dolgopolov of the Ukraine in 5 sets. Nooooooooooo. Soderling hit 51 unforced erros compared to Dolgopolovs 23 and only 34 winners compared to 50.

So my hot tip for the final has gone out in the 4th round, not happy. New prediction: Murray vs Djokovic final – could go either way, I’m so undecided.

    Martina Hingis was a junkie…

Editor’s notes: “womens game” should be “women’s game” ;)

    • Adora says:

Don’t mess with Martina Hingis. She was, and still is, a legend!

Yes, I know it’s written as “women’s” but to me that reads “women is” and it’s not a “women is” tennis match.

      • VQ says:

I’m not sure about the “still is” part, but I guess I agree with the “was”…

Editor’s notes: Ah, but you would be mistaken, my dear – in this context the apostrophe and the ‘s’ denotes possession (eg. Martina’s tennis racquet, Nadal’s injury) – so it’s not equivalent to ‘is’ like its use in “there’s”, “that’s”, “it’s”, “what’s”, “how’s”, etc, etc.
Where did you learn English? (Obviously, this is a joke, as the answer is the same place that I learnt English) lol

  3. Woo! Djokovic is through to the final. What an awesome match against Federer. Will he win the final? Hmm… tough call. Djokovic over Murray in 4 sets.
